Poems: Love Poems

Aftermath

It wasn’t only a dream,
what I said.
Remembering
your arm, your whole body,
like some cerebral word—
of course it was never spoken,
it was never heard,
like a dream on the other
side of the world.

You slept at night without worry
as if it was all nothing,
or something better left unsaid.
But I couldn’t.
I was dreadful to you,
I said things better not said.

Your arm, your whole body,
it was like
music, say, when music
is most glad, most sad,
distant and unafraid
