Song of the Children Who Will Never Be Born

The wind never blows, the leaves never green,
the past never passes into memory’s scene;
we have no past, the future we mourn—
we are the children who will never be born.

God gave us grace, and beauty too,
gave us fine hands, and wonders to do,
lost language of love, a world to adorn—
we are the children who will never be born.

The dust has not settled on the earth that was;
when it does it will lie undisturbed by us;
the flower of our lives has turned into thorn—
we are the children who will never be born.

The people of earth launched destruction one day;
they blinded the birds, and burned the leaves gray;
the hope of all life was in one moment torn—
we are the children who will never be born.
