Poems: War & Peace

Lie Peacefully, my Beauty

Lie peacefully, my beauty,
lie peacefully by me, love,
though the whole world is turning
above.

No use to weep, my darling,
though the valley full of summer song
is silent now the world is turning
wrong.

The armies above are marching
and the trumpets breathe their sobbing sound;
the world above is dying, while still turning
round.

I was your love, my beauty.
We who knew such love cannot be glad
the world was full of hatred and turned
mad.
